THERE were major upsets in the Ilembe Cricket Union double-wicket tournament played at the Gledhow Ground on Sunday.

Tournament favourites Alveiro Nadasen and Dillon Rautenbach, who scored a century each in the recent Warriors Sport T20 Cup, suffered a shock first round defeat at the hands of rookies Surauv Singh and Arhad Singh.

The fancied duo of Ahmed Sanwar and Zulfiqar Ali were sent for an early shower after crashing out to Adesh Bageloo and Rekyle Mahabeer in the opening round of the tournament.

Rank outsiders Desigan Pillay and Iqbal Sher were crowned Ilembe senior double-wicket champions after beating former double champions Bilal Ismail and Ebrahim “Boetie” Ismail in the final. Sher scooped the batting award and was unanimously declared player of the tournament.

Desigan Pillay scooped the bowling and Aaron Pillay, who took no less than six catches was voted fielder of the tournament.

The North Coast Primary School duo of Jared Naidoo and Shriyan Naidoo were crowned under 11 champions after beating Huzayfa and Ashraf of Zakarriya Muslim School in the final played at the Dawnview Primary School Ground on Saturday.

Shriyan, who top scored with 33 runs and bowled two maiden overs in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, was adjudged the best batsman and bowler of the tournament. Ashraf was voted fielder of the tournament.

Adesh Bageloo and Saieshan Logenathan clinched the late Kem Maraj and Family-sponsored under 16 title after beating Cameron Pillay and Alex Pillay in the final. Mayuren was voted batsman of the tournament. Saieshan Logenathan scooped the bowling accolade and Wasim Suleman was adjudged best fielder.

The under 13 double-wicket tournament was marred by controversy after co-ordinator Delilyan Subrayan allowed a 15-year-old player to participate. Parents were up in arms and protested vehemently after the 15-year-old player together with his partner advanced to the final.

Officials of the Ilembe Cricket Union have decided to declare Saturday’s results null and void. The under 13 tournament has been re-scheduled for 23 May at the Country Club Ground at 9am. Only primary school children (up to grade seven), born in 2002/2003 will be allowed to participate
