YOGAN Pillay clinched the Terrence Subban and Family-sponsored KwaDukuza Darts Association (KDDA) singles title after beating Paddy Padachee (2-1) in an entertaining final played before a partisan crowd at the North Coast Tavern on Wednesday night.

Pillay got off to a dream start after hammering Sanjay Singh in straight sets (2-0) in their quarter-final clash. Vasa Rungasamy got off to a stuttering start, dropping the first set against Terrence Subban before turning on the heat as the game gained momentum.

Rungasamy won the next two sets comfortably to book his place in the semi-final against Pillay. Rungasamy was firing blanks against an in-form Pillay, who pulverised his rival in straight sets (2-0) to advance to the final.

Tournament favourite, Vinesh Geanballey, who has been enjoying a purple patch suffered a shock 2-0 loss against Vishalin Parmasivan in the quarter-finals. Veteran darts campaigner Paddy Padayachee proved his mettle against opponent Jerry Arunachellam (winning 2-1) to secure a semi-final berth against Parmasivan.

Padayachee proved that his quarter-final victory was no fluke after pulverising Parmasivan (2-0) to book his place in the final.

The final proved to be a humdinger. Pillay got off to a flying start in the final, and after two rounds of darts was already in the 100s and needed just three darts to close. Padayachee didn’t throw in the towel, but fought back dramatically in the second set, snatching victory right at the finish line to level the scores, 1-1.

Padayachee put on a spirited display in the third and decisive set, despite going 2-1 to newly crowned singles champion Pillay.

KDDA president, Jerry Govender thanked the Subban family for their sponsorship and congratulated all players on the spirit of sportsmanship that prevailed throughout the tournament. He was indebted to the management of North Coast Tavern for the use of their venue for the darts league.

The Quartz in Stanger Manor is to become the new home for darts in KwaDukuza. The Hooblal’s Catering-sponsored doubles league will continue tomorrow (Wednesday) at The Quartz at 7.30pm.

New clubs and players interested in participating in the doubles league are requested to meet at The Quartz on Wednesday night by 7.30pm.

In other darts news, a development programme targeting the youth and fairer sex will take place every Friday at The Oval at 7pm. Govender said: “The aim of our development programme is to give the youth and women an opportunity to play competitive darts”.
