“Mr Ackerman is stable and we have been informed that the swelling has eased. “Please keep his wife and family in prayer as well.”

The final update on Qwabe’s condition stated that she was out of theatre and “all went well”.

According to emergency services, the minibus they were travelling in crashed into a truck.

IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Sam Meyrick said the truck driver appeared to be unharmed.

Meyrick said the cause was not yet known, but the intersection was notorious for accidents.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said KwaDukuza Fire and Emergency firemen at the scene had to use the jaws of the life to free the injured, and paramedics had to climb into the wreckage to stabilise those still trapped, until they were freed.

He said it was difficult to deduce the cause, but it appeared that the school minibus had hit the side of the truck when turning on to the R102.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the cause of the accident is not yet known.

“Traffic and police officials were on the scene and an investigation is continuing. No arrests have been made because the cause of the accident is not known at this stage.”
