THE Stanger Hospital will host a Donor Breast Milk Bank Awareness Day at the Nevas School on Thursday, 26 November from 10am.
Importance of Breastfeeding

Breastmilk is considered the perfect food for infants. It provides optimal nutrition by meeting the baby’s micronutrient, protein and energy needs. Breastmilk provides immunological and anti-infective factors.

Breastmilk lowers the incidence of hospital acquired infections among preterm infants. It prevents the incidence of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and late onset of sepsis.

Importance of Donor Breast Milk

Research shows that giving breastmilk is the most important factor in preventing deaths in children under five years. Eight percent of South African moms exclusively breastfeed for six months. Breastmilk has many advantages for mom and baby, especially if baby is vulnerable or pre-term.

Promotion of exclusive breastfeeding is included in many child health campaigns. It is now a top priority. An estimated 150 000 babies are born prematurely in South Africa per year.
One in four of these infants have difficulty with breastfeeding because of their slow development, or the mother is unable to breastfeed or is unavailable.

Donor human breastmilk can therefore be lifesaving.

What is a Donor Breast Milk Bank and why is it important?

A donor milk bank involves breastfeeding mothers voluntarily expressing and donating breastmilk, without compromising their supply for their own babies.
This is where moms can donate their extra breastmilk, to help other vulnerable babies.
The breastmilk is packaged, pasteurised and stored until it is needed.

A donor milk-bank gives moms who cannot breastfeed their babies a chance to give their babies safe breastmilk. It also helps moms who do not have enough breastmilk to feed their babies enough. Donor breastmilk also assists in reducing infant morbidity and mortality rates.

Where is the Stanger Hospital’s Donor Milk Bank?

The milk bank is situated within the hospital’s neonatal unit. Commercial grade equipment for pasteurisation, located in the neonatal unit is used.

Stanger Hospital is the central breastmilk bank for iLembe District.

Moms who qualify to donate:

· Healthy and safe

· Non-smoker

· Not receiving any medication that is contra-indicated during breastfeeding including antidepressants

· No sepsis post-surgery or an infant without sepsis following delivery
