DAWNHEIGHTS Cricket Club walloped Verulam by 75-runs in a KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Challenge League (Stream Two) game played at the Gledhow Ground on Sunday.

The match was reduced to 40-overs due to a wet pitch. The hosts got off to a shocker after opener Byron Athymoolam was dismissed by Brandon Chetty for a duck.

Matthew Dean and Francois Mostert consolidated the innings, putting on a 72-runs partnership for the second wicket after the early setback. Dean scored a note-worthy 32 runs in treacherous conditions which included four boundaries before being dismissed by Saiskumar Thulisiraman.

Mostert smashed 48 runs which included five 4s and a huge 6 before being adjudged LBW to a Thulisiraman delivery in the 21st over. The home team lost four quick wickets for 28 runs, slipping from 88/3 to 116/7 in the 30th over.

Thulisiraman claimed the scalps of Sagar Arora (5) and Adesh Bageloo (4) with Keane Govender (4) being adjudged LBW to a Chris Govender delivery and Charl Groenewald (9) offering a simple catch to give Govender a quick double.

Debutante Owen Govender was clean bowled by Owen for 5 runs. Arun Kumar and Suveer Maharaj put on a splendid 31-runs partnership for the ninth wicket (taking the tally from 121/8 to 152/9) before Kumar (18) was clean bowled by Vishal Singh.

Dawnheights posted 164/9 in their allotted 40-overs with Maharaj smashing an unbeaten 20 runs which included a six off the last ball.

Thulisiraman was the pick of the Phoenix bowlers claiming 4/17 from 8 overs. Govender grabbed 3/28 from 8 overs.

Chasing 165 runs for victory from 40 overs (at a rate of 4,13 runs per over) the visitors got off to a shocker losing their first four wickets for just 17 runs. Opener Afzal was caught by Keane Govender off the bowling of Mostert for 7 runs before Sohail Zafar (2) became Mostert’s second victim.

Sumeshan was clean bowled by Mikhailin Naicker for a duck before Matthew Naidoo was brilliantly run out by Athymoolam without getting off the mark.

Cameron Ganesh and Keerath Baijnath took the tally from 17/4 to 38/5 before Ganesh (12) was trapped LBW to a Matthew Dean delivery. Vishal Singh (20) and Baijnath battled gamely to keep the slender hopes of the visitors alive, but with the demise of Baijnath (35), Phoenix were out for 89 runs.

The pick of the Dawnheights bowlers were Mostert (2/19 from 8 overs) and Arun Kumar (3/24 from 8 overs).
