DESMOND Pillay of Grove End Volleyball Club received an early Christmas present when he was voted setter of the year in the KDVA Premier League at the association’s annual awards presentation ceremony held on Friday night.

President of KDVA, Isaac Abraham said: “The setter is the most crucial position in volleyball and it is only the the outstanding, uncanny ability of Pillay, Grove End were able to dominate volleyball in KwaDukuza.”

“Players must learn to emulate Pillay, who despite his outstanding talent does not have a chip on his shoulder.

“His calmness on the courts even when the odds are stacked against them has been the trademark of Pillay and apart from awarding him with the setter of the year award, officials of KDVA unanimously agreed that he should win the coveted player of the year title,” added Abraham.

The attacker of the year award was won by Vinnie Singh for the second year is succession. Neven Baldeo scooped the most valuable player (MVP) award. Grove End scooped the lion’s share of awards and it came as no surprise when they were voted club of the year.

Daniel John of Warriors Sport, who is destined for greater glory (given the proper guidance and coaching) was adjudged the most improved player.

In the KDVA First Division League the lanky central Leon Ramsamy of Sunbrook was voted attacker of the year. Ramsamy’s outstanding ability as attacker and blocker also earned him the coveted player of the year award.

Speaking to the Stanger Weekly, Ramsamy said: “I am indeed humbled with a double whammy (attacker and player of the year award) and this would not have been possible without my team-mates and coach-cum-manager Devan Moonsamy, who always had the confidence in me.”

Suman Chetty of Sunbrook was voted setter of the year with Ismail Essop of Darnall scooping the most valuable player award. Nevlin Moodley was voted the most improved player in the First Division ranks.

First Division League champions, Sunbrook were voted club of the year. The coveted president’s award was won by Revy Harryprasad.
