Five schools given soccer equipment

2016-03-23 06:00

AMAZULU Football Club, through its community trust, handed over soccer equipment to five schools in the iLembe District to kick start the KZN Future Stars programme targeting the under 12 age group.

Five primary schools have been chosen to be part of the programme, namely Dawnview, Tshelabantu, Shakaskraals, New Guilderland and KwaDukuza Primary School.

The equipment includes 10 soccer balls, whistles, ball pump, stop watch, bibs and cones.

KZN Future Stars programme manager Mpho Dintwa said the five coaches, Themba Mbatha, Siphiwe Dube, Bobby Dladla, Njabulo Cele and Nkululeko Nyawo attended a life skills workshop recently which will help them train the youngsters.

He said the coaches and schools would work together to determine which social ills beleaguer the area the school is situated in so as to address that with the young players.

Dintwa said the programme does not focus on physical activity alone but looks at the players holistically.

He said both boys and girls can take part in the two hour weekly sessions of the programme which would be run after school hours so as to not affect teaching and learning.

He said the young players who will be part of the programme stand a chance to be awarded scholarships to study at Glenwood High School.

The programme starts in the first week of March and will culminate with a school tournament in October.

iLembe District’s director of corporate services Yvonne Mathonsi said the municipality welcomes the programme as it would benefit local stars.
