FOOD for Life – KwaDukuza achieved its goal of preparing 108 pots and serving 27 000 free meals to impoverished communities on Saturday.

The organisation realised this goal with the assistance of just over 400 volunteers. Not only were individuals part of the drive, but several companies played a major part in sponsoring the organisation as well.

Earlier this year Food for Life took the decision to increase the number of plates they distribute on a weekly basis from 2000 to 4000 plates.

The organisation’s Babu Sampath said: “The problem we were facing was that the kitchen had become too small to prepare these meals. A decision was taken to build a new kitchen but we lacked the necessary funds as the cost was R350 000.
“For the first phase a team was set up and funds began to drizzle into the account and the building had started. By the end of last week a total amount of R170 000 was used and work was to stop on the kitchen until the balance of R180 000 is collected.”

Sampath said businessman Vivian Reddy, who was present on Saturday, pledged R180 000 towards the completion of the kitchen.

“He also pledged to build another Food for Life kitchen in Durban,” he said.

Sampath said the organisation would like to extend its gratitude towards the benevolent Vivian Reddy and other sponsors who assisted in building the kitchen.

“We would also like to thank all other sponsors who constantly help us to fight poverty in the KwaDukuza area.”
