AN eight-year-old girl was among the four people who were killed in a head-on collision on the N2 between Zinkwazi and KwaDukuza on Sunday evening.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics the force of the impact was so severe that it caused the vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and a Hilux bakkie, to be mangled together.

IPSS Medical Rescue's paramedics together with KwaDukuza Fire and Emergency Services and EMRS had to work together to free and treat the victims.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, the male and female in the car were killed on impact and the Jaws of Life were used to free them and the four other injured victims from the wreckage.

“Sadly the eight-year-old child died due to extensive traumatic injuries sustained from the accident. Paramedics worked tirelessly to resuscitate the child, but sadly the child died despite resuscitation efforts.”

The fourth victim, a male from the bakkie, who was also critically injured, died in hospital.

At the time of going to press, the two victims who survived, a woman and child, remained in a critical condition in hospital.
