ILEMBE Cricket Club took on Umzinto on a revamped Gledhow pitch on Sunday.

Umzinto skipper D Govender won the toss and decided to bowl in the first match to be played at the newly revamped Gledhow cricket ground.

Ilembe openers S Dlamini and A Sarwar started cautiously on the new pitch.

They soon found their feet as they found boundaries with some good stroke-play as they put on 45 before Dlamini was trapped LBW for 23 of the bowling of V Slabbat in the 7th over.

Sarwar was joined by captain A Nadasen and together they put on a solid partnership of 66 taking the total to 111 in the 21st over before the dreaded Nelson struck as Sarwar fell for a well played 63 (five 4s,three 6s). He was caught by B Kinnear of A Rajkumar. As the sun shone, the pitch flattened and the Umzinto attack began to tire.

Nadasen 34, Z Ali 18 fell to Rajkumar and P Pillay respectively but that brought I Mahomed to the crease and together with younster Alex Pillay they decided to toil, putting up the highest partnership of the innings, 67, taking the total to 212 in the 46th over.

Mahomed fought hard for a well compiled 42 (five 4’s), stumped by V Singh of Slabbat.
I Sher joined Pillay in the 47th and with strict instructions to go for it he hit a quick fire 24 (two 4s,one 6).

Sher was run out of the 2nd last ball leaving Pillay unbeaten for a stubborn 28. Ilembe racked up 242/6 after 50 overs.
A Rajkumar 2/33 in 10 and Slabbat 2/59 after 10 overs stood out for Umzinto. In reply Umzinto openers also played cautiously.
A Pillay and V Singh put on 38 before R Mlomgo struck his first wicket for Ilembe removing Pillay thanks to a sharp catch from L Jali in the slips for 27 in the 9th over.

P Pillay joined Singh and took the total to 48 in the 12th over before Singh was trapped LBW by I Mahomed for 12. Slabbat came and went as he lasted only one ball with Mahomed striking again. 48/3 in the 12th soon became 109/6 as Umzinto began to self destruct.

The only resistance came from P Pillay as he struck the occasional bad ball to the fence, but once he fell for 43 to Nadasen in the 29th, the writing was on the wall. Nadasen and Alex wrapped up the tale taking the last 3 wickets for a mere 9 runs. Umzinto bundled out for 118 after 33.4 overs. Nadasen 3/5 in 4 overs, Sher 2/11 in 4, Mhlongo 2/19 in 7 and Mahomed 2/32 in 7 overs rolled over the stunned Umzinto batsmen.

Ilembe won by 124 runs.
