iLembe residents urged to participate in survey

2016-03-23 06:00

STATISTICS South Africa (SSA) is currently conducting a Community Survey (CS 2016) which SSA district manager Sakhile Mpanza described as a large-scale household survey undertaken in-between censuses which provides accurate statistics in the short to medium term.

“The survey aims to provide a better understanding of the state of the country. It will provide information needed to make decisions and to plan. It is also aimed at providing the population estimate and data that will serve as input into the Integrated Development Plans,” said Mpanza.

He said an approximate of 13 377 households have been sampled in the iLembe District Municipality. 6118 of these are within the KwaDukuza Municipality; 2503 in Mandeni; 2508 in Ndwedwe and 2248 households have been sampled in kwaMaphumulo.

Mpanza said the survey commenced on 7 March and should be conducted until 22 April 2016.

“Fieldworkers are visiting the selected homes to complete a once-off questionnaire. The sampled households will be asked questions related to the household’s information, employment, education, services, housing and the household’s goods,” he said.

He said the CS fieldworkers can be identified through official identity cards, which include a hologram image to verify authenticity. The identity card will have the fieldworkers’ name, surname, identity number and the province. This needs to be produced when fieldworkers visit sampled homes.

“Fieldworkers employed by Statistics South Africa who will be conducting the Community Survey are branded with bibs and yellow caps. The district or provincial offices can be contacted to verify if the person at your door is legitimate. The provincial office number is 031 360 0600 and the person to contact there is Bongani Hadebe our Field Operations Manager or you can contact the district office on 032 551 2404 and ask to speak with Nondumiso Thango our district survey coordinator or me,” said Mpanza.

He urged residents of iLembe District to participate in this survey by answering the questions which would be asked which would allow the fieldworkers to collect the required information. He assured residents that the information supplied would remain confidential, as it is guaranteed in section 17 of the Statistics Act.
