ILEMBE Cricket Union walloped Railways of Tongaat by 8-wickets in a KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Challenge League (Stream One) game played at the Maidstone Ground on Sunday.

The game was delayed by more than two hours due to a wet pitch and outfield. The match was reduced to 35-overs with the first ball being bowled at 11:20 (instead of the scheduled 9:00am kick-off).

The visitors won the toss and decided to bowl first in the hope of extracting something from the sticky pitch. The home team relished the opportunity of batting first with openers Trish Pillay and Brandon Govender putting on an opening stand of 69 runs in 12 overs.

Govender scored a “quick-fire” 29 runs which included five boundaries before being caught behind by wicket-keeper Yusuf Ismail off the bowling of Ismail Mahomed.

Sheldon Sewsunker joined Pillay at the crease and this pair took the tally to 94/2 in the 20th over. Pillay (56) scored a brilliant half-century which included six fours and two huge sixes before being clean bowled by Alveiro Nadasen.

Sewsunker and Dawood Mather put on a note-worthy 44-runs partnership for the third wicket before Sewsunker (12) was caught by Yusuf Ismail off the bowling of Bilal Ismail. With the demise of Sewsunker, Kieran Nohari came to the crease and took a quick single to give the in-form Dawood an opportunity to keep strike.

But, the plan backfired after Dawood (44) was caught at point by Mahomed in the next delivery by Ismail. Nohari and Wayne Naicker added 26-runs to the Railways tally (139/4 to 165/5) before Nohari (22) was brilliantly run out by Yusuf Ismail at the non-striker’s end.

Manoj Nohari was run out for a solitary run by debutante Alex Pillay. Railways posted 181/6 in their allotted 35-overs with Naicker unbeaten on 16 runs and Sachin Nohari (4 not out). Bilal Ismail was the pick of the Ilembe bowlers claiming 2/19 from 4 overs.

Chasing 182 runs for victory (at a rate of 5,2 runs per over) Ilembe got off to a flying start, batting at a rate of seven runs per over in the first five overs before Ahmed Sarwar (11) was clean bowled by Mather.

Alveiro Nadasen and Steven Jacobs took the tally to 48/2 before Jacobs was caught at mid-on by Sewsunker off the bowling of Mather for 20 runs.

There were some long faces in the Ilembe camp after the loss of the 2nd wicket, but man-of-the-match Iqbal Sher and Nadasen brought back the smiles on the faces of their team-mates with a match-winning 134-runs partnership.

Sher scored a brilliant unbeaten 86 runs which included nine fours and five sixes and Nadasen an undefeated 37 runs which included three fours to guide Ilembe to an emphatic 8-wickets victory. The Ilembe lads can look forward to a well deserved festive break before locking horns with log leaders Clares at the Asherville Ground on January 10.
