KWADUKUZA Athletic Club (KDAC) hosted a glittering awards banquet at The Quartz Conference Centre in Stanger Manor on Saturday night honouring athletes and officials who excelled in the 2015 season.

Guests were privy to an inspiring power-point presentation highlighting athletes’ participation in races (including the golf day and breakfast run at the Tinley Manor Beach) throughout the year.

KDAC president, Danny Sewmungal said: “When I was elected as president of the club on 22 November, 2014 I was sceptical at first because of the daunting task ahead of me in maintaining the high standard set by predecessors, but nonetheless I accepted the challenge.

“Given the support by my executive members I can proudly say that 2015 was a successful season for the club. After our welcome party in February, thanks to our respective convenors, the club was well represented at all races - 42km, 21km and 10 km - in KwaZulu-Natal and the Bosveld Three-In-One race in Limpopo Province.

“The Comrades evening must go down as the most memorable event on our calendar with experienced runners sharing their thoughts, feelings and emotions that come with the ultimate human race - the Comrades Marathon - and giving tips on how to tackle the big five hills throughout the epic 89km race.”

Sewmungal congratulated Philani Mkhize (8: 59) and Jairaj Ramnath (11:41) who completed the 2015 Comrades Marathon. Thulani Zungu, who finished the Comrades Marathon four minutes after the official cut-time, was awarded a trophy for perseverance.

Trophies were awarded to Vani Naidoo, Dayanand Ramrup, Melody Ndlovu, Shireen Sewmungal, Jaglall Jagadaw, Bina Ramrup, Dippy Moodley, Das Harilall, Jairaj Ramnath, Chander Gungadeen, Nikeyi Maarbeel and Danny Sewmungal who have completed more than 20 time trials during the year which are held every Thursday at the Stanger Manor car park.

Bina Ramrup, who has clocked more than 203 km in the 5km and 10km walks throughout 2015 was judged walker of the year.
Nishen Chetty, Leon Moodliar, Indran Naidoo, Dippy Moodley, Vijesh Mahadeo and Sewmungal, who carried the KDAC flag high in Limpopo Province, participating in the 42km, 21km and 10km all in one day, were acknowledged for their outstanding feat.

Sewmungal, who has displayed remarkable ability in advancing the aims, status and image of the club, earned himself with a prestigious award.
Since joining the club in 2010, he has completed four Comrades Marathons, successive Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town, the Buffalo Marathon in Port Elizabeth and the Bosveld 3-in-1 Marathon.

Jairaj Ramnath was voted runner of the year with 78-year-old Nikei Maarbeel scooping the prestigious president’s award.
