KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu convened a special stakeholder appreciation event last Thursday, at the KwaDukuza Town Hall, where he commended role-players in law enforcement and emergency services for their enduring dedication and commitment to the public, especially over the festive season.

“We pay tribute to the men and women who work under difficult conditions to ensure that there is stability in our communities.

These officials make life-threatening sacrifices, which go unseen to the world. Therefore, as Council, we do feel the sense of indebtedness to these agencies for their sacrifices and dedication to peace and stability. Unity and cooperation will always rest at the centre of our strength if we are to win the fight against crime”, Mthembu said.

Mthembu expressed the necessity for peace and stability in order to attract more investors to participate in the local economy.

“KwaDukuza is an area of investment, it cannot become a breeding ground for violent crimes and no one would want to invest in an economy that is owned by criminals," he said.

Mthembu unreservedly emphasised peace, stability and wellness as one of the most important responsibilities of these agencies, describing unity as their centre of strength as he showered them with accolades.

“It is now evident that through our partnerships, we are turning the tide against violent crimes and drinking and driving due to the reported statistics following the festive season. I have said time and again that we have placed a high priority on domestic violence and violent crimes. The partnerships in law enforcement agencies hold true of this," the mayor said.

He said we need to mobilise communities to ensure that there is no space for criminality in our community.

“We are in a democracy; we need public officials who have patriotic pride, dedication and commitment to the creation of safe and secure environments”, Mthembu said.

The municipality's executive director for community safety Cecil Veramuthu said his department wanted to minimise road fatalities during the festive season, be visible and be efficient.

"But most importantly we wanted to save lives, and I think we did that. We worked for long hours under stressful conditions, working with some intolerant members of the public," he said.

Head of the KwaDukuza SAPS cluster unit, major general M.R. Chirwa applauded the support the SAPS received from counterparts and the community at large.

"The South African Police Services cannot be alone in the fight against crime. Partnerships between communities and political leaders are key for the police force. These partnerships also help bridge the gap between the police and communities," he said.

Chirwa said the SAPS recovered a significant number of illegal firearms during the festive season.
