More than 1000 arrested during the festive season

THE KwaZulu-Natal SAPS conducted Operation Fiela throughout the province from 21 December to 27 December 2015 which resulted with the arrest of 1061 suspects, said provincial spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane.

Zwane said these suspects were arrested for various crimes which include murder, robbery, sexual offences, assault, being in possession of drugs, and unlicensed firearms, stock theft, housebreak-ins, shoplifting, drunken driving and attempted murder.

He said a total of 7398.161 grams of drugs were recovered during the operations and this includes marijuana, cocaine powder and crack cocaine, herion, whoonga, mandrax tablets.

He said the unlicensed firearms recovered include pistols, special revolvers, AK47 rifles and shotguns as well as ammunition.

“The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain whether they were involved in any other crimes in the country. The members also recovered a total of 15 suspected stolen vehicles which will be subjected for further investigation,” said Zwane

He said all arrested suspects were charged accordingly and appeared in various Magistrates Courts across the province.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded police for their hard work during the festive season.

“Our members will continue to strive in protecting the citizens of this province including the holiday makers. Members of the community are encouraged to continue supporting police in the fight against crime by informing police of the whereabouts of wanted criminals,” she said.
