FIVE people were killed and one was critically injured in the early hours of Sunday morning in a head-on collision between a car and an SUV on the N2 near bridge 16, Mandeni.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst, when paramedics arrived three occupants of the SUV and the driver and a 12-year-old from the car, had succumbed to their injuries.

“A female passenger was still entrapped and in a critical condition. IPSS Medical Rescue advanced life support paramedic initiated advanced life support intervention while Rural Metro used the jaws of life to free her from the wreckage,” he said.

Herbst said when the critically injured patient arrived at the hospital she went into cardiac arrest.

“Resuscitation was started by the paramedics and the Stanger Hospital doctors and within minutes she regained a normal heart rhythm.
“She remains in a critical condition,” he said.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda has ordered a full investigation into the accident.

“I have asked the department’s Road Traffic Inspectorate and the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this horror crash,” Kaunda said in a statement.

He conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those in hospital a speedy recovery.

Kaunda asked the head of the Department­ of Transport Sibusiso Gumbi to visit the families of the deceased and those who are hospitalised to establish how government can be of assistance to them.
