2016-01-06 06:00

A STREET brawl in KwaTshobho, in Maphumulo, during the early hours of New Year’s Day resulted in the death of one man and injury of several others.

SAPS provincial spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that an incident took place on 1 January, at KwaTshobho area where Nkululeko Mtetwa (24) and another victim were attacked by a group of men.

“The suspects opened fire, fatally wounding Mtetwa and the another [sic] was taken to hospital for medical attention. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. A case of murder and attempted murder was opened. Six suspects, aged between 19 and 27, were arrested for murder and were expected to appear in court on Monday, 4 January,” said Zwane.

However, it is believed that once the fight had ensued between the two groups the Mtetwa had allegedly produced a firearm and fired a shot injuring an individual from the opposing group in the leg.

Members from the injured person’s group then retaliated apparently using traditional weapons and knives which resulted with Mtetwa being killed and four of his companions seriously wounded and rushed to hospital.

Maphumulo station commander Nicholas Mchunu said the Umhlali Dog Unit was called to the scene, and after investigation, several suspects were arrested for murder.

The suspects appeared in the Maphumulo Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
