NKOBONGO residents protested for a second time in the same week last Friday morning.
The demonstrations followed protesting that broke out last Monday in which protesters reportedly had gripes with the current councillor and the ANC’s candidate believed to be nominated to contest local government elections.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Shooz Magudulela said on Friday the community was still complaining about the ward councillor and a lack of service delivery in the area.

He said no injuries to persons or damage to property was reported and that later in the day calm had been restored in the area.

Nkobongo (Ward 8) councillor Themba Ntuli said according to what he had been told the protest was about the ANC’s nomination process for a candidate to stand for elections this year.

He said the party’s nominees had not been introduced to the community and since elections are drawing nearer this agitated residents.

Speaking to the Weekly on Monday, he said calm had been restored in the area and that he had been informed that a public meeting is scheduled for Sunday, 22 May 2016.

ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region spokesperson Lucky Makhathini said in light of the protests that have ensued from political issues, the region’s top brass had formed various teams sent out to these affected areas with a purpose of engaging with locals and finding a solution.
