SAPPI invited some of PROTEC’s brightest sparks on the North Coast to attend a lunch at Palm Dunes Hotel on Thursday.

Three matriculants from the PROTEC Mandeni branch and three from the PROTEC Stanger branch each achieved distinctions in both mathematics and physical science during the 2015 exams and they were each awarded R20 000 by Sappi; R10 000 per subject distinction.

The recipients from the Mandeni branch were Desilan Govender, Sindiswa Khuzwayo and Joshua Yuan; and from the Stanger branch was Mahesh Naidoo, Samir Sahadeo and Lungelo Mzoneli.

The money will be used for tertiary studies of their choice at a Department of Higher Education and Training recognised university or university of technology.

Sappi has been supporting PROTEC – a programme for the advancement of technological careers – since 1995 and during 2014 introduced a financial incentive on the programme by offering a R10 000 award to those achieving distinctions in maths and science in their matric exams.

This year yielded the best results since the programme was introduced and in total 50 distinctions were earned in these two subjects by matric pupils from the Sappi-supported PROTEC branches at Mandeni, Stanger, Umkomaas, Pietermaritzburg and Nelspruit.
