2016-05-18 06:00

CONVICTED rapist Thulani Nzama (41) was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment on Thursday 12 May, at the KwaDukuza Regional Court for raping a 24-year-old woman in 2014.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the victim was attacked and raped on 3 May 2014.

“At around 1pm the victim was on her way home when she was approached by the accused who offered her a job. Whilst they were walking the accused attacked the victim, dragged her into the bushes and raped her. He took her cellphone and fled the scene. She screamed for help and members of the community came to her rescue,” he said.

Zwane said people who had come to help the victim then searched the area until the accused was apprehended.
He said police were called to the scene and upon arrival the accused was handed over and was arrested for rape and robbery.

“The docket was transferred to the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit for further investigation. He made various court appearances until he was sentenced,” he said.

KZN SAPS Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the KwaDukuza FCS for their dedication in solving the case and sending the rapist to prison.

“We welcome the sentence and we hope that it will send a strong message to other would be rapists who target our vulnerable women and children,” she said.
