SALT Rock I suffered back-to-back losses in the Play Sport 365-sponsored Dolphin Coast Squash Summer League double header played last week.

On Tuesday night, Salt Rock I suffered a shock 7-10 defeat at the hands of Umhlali I and on Thursday night they were left licking their wounds after slumping to a humiliating 6-11 derby defeat at the hands of Salt Rock III.

In the match played on Tuesday night, Bev Livingston gave Umhlali a dream start after beating Ian Stapleton in straight sets (3-0). Elvis Govender reduced the deficit to 2-points (2-4) with a pulsating 2-1 win against Mathhew Gachoki.

Prenolin Govender gave Salt Rock a glimmer of hope (reducing the deficit to one point) after beating Andre Conradie (2-1). With two matches remaining, Salt Rock needed an outright victory from one of the matches and a point from the other game to seal a memorable comeback.

But, Michelle Heenen trounced Shane Govindasamy in straight sets (3-0) to seal victory for Umhlali (10-7 including the 2-bonus points) and despite Avesh Nurbadh’s 3-0 demolition of Calvin Bonnar, the dead rubber victory was of no consequence.

On Thursday, Salt Rock 1 shot themselves in the foot after Nurbadh and Govindasamy claimed a walkover against Wesley Moodie and Jono Hein.

With an emphatic 6-0 lead, Salt Rock I needed to win one of the three remaining matches in the hope of redeeming themselves after Tuesday’s disappointing home defeat.

Musa Khumalo ruined Indran Pather’s birthday celebration after cantering to a fluent 3-0 win to give Salt Rock III a glimmer of hope. Fedri Vasapoli levelled the scores at 6-6 after trouncing Elvis Govender 3-0.

Warren Viljoen proved too strong for Suzy Stapleton, winning 3-0 to give Salt Rock III a hat-trick of victories and more importantly, snatch victory (11-6) from the jaws of death (trailing 0-6 at the start of the match).
