SKKSA en route to national karate champs

THE Stanger Dojo branch of Shotokan Kokusai Karatedo SA (SKKSA) recently participated in the iLembe District Championships, which was held to select top athletes to represent the district at provincial level.
Karatekas from the SKKSA Dojo blazed through the district championships and stood tall amongst their competitors on the day.

Tia Moonsamy, Veeara Pillay, Kerrisa Naidoo, Mikyle Reddy, Mohammed Siddique Randeree, Emilio Ponnadu and Mohamed Yaseen all achieved district glory as they scooped podium positions.
These seven karatekas continued their training under the direct instruction of Sensei Sherwin Hooblal in preparation for the provincial championships which was held on 21 February.

Sensei Colin Combol, president of iLembe Karate and a senior referee at the event, congratulated Sherwin on his instructorship and recognised the talent of the students.

“This being our first year as a structured region in karate, the performance of your students have done iLembe proud, Congratulations to Sensei Sherwin on his appointment as District Coach, keep up the good work,” said Combol.

Sanctioned by Karate South Africa, the KZN Provincial Championships was a highly contested event, sporting the best karate athletes every region had to offer.
The calibre of competition was excellent and after all was concluded, Veeara Pillay, Kerrisa Naidoo, Mikyle Reddy, Mohammed Siddique Randeree and Mohamed Yaseen successfully attained their place in the provincial team to represent KZN at the KSA National All Styles Championships to be held this weekend at the UKZN Old Mutual Sports Centre.

“Our Dojo is known for producing pedigree karateka and I look forward to developing the youth in KwaDukuza,”said instructor and coach Sensei Sherwin.
