Source of KZN school brawl video to be investigated

THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is investigating the source of a viral Facebook video which shows two local school children in a brawl.

The video, shot on a cellphone camera in a classroom, shows one pupil viciously assaulting another.

Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said that when the video was brought to the attention of officials, they established it had been shot in February.

“This video was from February and the school had taken action against the learners involved and they were suspended.

“What the officials established is that we needed to protect the child further and they interviewed the victim in this matter, as well as the perpetrator. We are happy with the way in which the school handled the issue,” Mahlambi said.

Mahlambi said the department would investigate who leaked the video.

“With this video doing the rounds now, the victim has been victimised twice,” he said.

“When children see videos like this, they think it’s cool, the department wants to send a very strong warning to children involved in bullying; we will not tolerate this in our system,” Mahlambi added.
