Taking consumers for a ride

2017-03-15 06:02

BIG business, including manufacturers, are taking the public for a ride at times.
Besides questionable marketing and claims that are sometimes dubious or suspect, there is a disturbing trend to reduce the size of packaged products, primarily foods (for humans and pets) and detergents, but without commensurate price reduction.
Of recent note is a certain brand of ice cream (a good quality one mind you) where the one size has been reduced from 2 litres to 1.8 litres with price unchanged.

Over a decade ago the volume of canned cool drinks was reduced from 340ml to 330ml. No one complained then and this is the current standard size.

Is it not now an opportune time for consumers to unite and take a firm stand against such actions which, if not protested against or challenged, will become the norm leaving the consumer short changed.

The core aim of business, including  manufacturers, is profit making.
By all means do this but in a fair and ethical manner. Reducing product sizes without reducing the price is simply daylight robbery.
The buying public must ensure that they are not fleeced.

A national consumer boycott will definitely help where alternative brands can be purchased.
This would help to open the eyes of the of greedy companies who seem to be acting with impunity and think they can get away with such devious actions always.
