A TAXI travelling north on the N2 crashed into a lane at the Umvoti Toll Plaza on Friday evening injuring 17 people.

The two passengers travelling in the front of the taxi sustained critical injuries, they were stabilised by advanced life support before being rushed to hospital by IPSS Medical Rescue.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Samantha Meyrick the remaining 15 passengers and driver sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate and were all transported to hospital by IPSS Medical Rescue, EMRS and Alert.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the brakes of the taxi failed.

“Thank you to all services on scene, including EMRS, Kwadukuza Fire Department, traffic department, SAPS and ER24 advanced life support paramedics who were passing by and stopped to assist.”

In another accident, on Sunday, 17 January a vehicle rolled down an embankment and caught alight while travelling on the R102 between Ballito and Umhlali.

“Another private ambulance service arrived on scene, treating and transporting two occupants with minor injuries to a nearby hospital. IPSS Medical Rescue arrived shortly after and were informed by the other ambulance service as to the possibility of a third occupant, before they departed the scene.”

IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics and advanced life support proceeded to search the nearby area.
“The third occupant was found some distance from the wreckage, having being ejected from the vehicle during the crash. The man was in a critical condition, having to be intubated and ventilated by IPSS Medical Rescue advanced life support and was rushed to hospital for further care.

“Unfortunately the man later passed away in casualty,” said Meyrick.
