A reservoir in the Nyakana area, suspected to have been leaking for just over a month, has resulted in the loss of thousands of litres of potable water.

A concerned citizen Jules Viljoen, who has been working on a construction site near the reservoir, brought this matter to the attention of the Stanger Weekly.

With the entire province experiencing severe droughts and certain areas in the iLembe District having water shortages and restrictions the suspected leak is a serious concern.

Viljoen said he suspects that one of the reservoirs is leaking and that what he has noticed ever since he started working in the area is that potable water is lost whenever a reservoir is full and starts overflowing.

He said the suspected leak and overflow runs onto a newly tarred road and since this happens frequently it means the road is being damaged.

Furthermore, Viljoen said the water that runs from the reservoirs flow into an abandoned quarry which has now become a “dam”.

“My question is who is going to pay for all the water that has been lost? Secondly, why is the reservoir allowed to leak or overflow for such a long time, why are they not doing anything about it?”

When Viljoen initially brought this matter to the Weekly attempts to get a response from the iLembe District Municipality were made, but to date no response has been received.
