Rainbow Guest House & Tours in Uitenhage is celebrating its 10th year in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Nonzwanga Sylvia Thisani, a former educator, bade farewell to classrooms and during 2006 started a three-bedroom guest house at 28 Lilac Road.

Bookings increased and it was needed to expand. Today Rainbow Guest House offers six rooms and a two bedroom family unit, each equipped with air conditioner, DStv hotel package, a separate entrance, wifi and secure parking.

“Passion and patience are what it takes to be successful in this industry. Also of importance are customer service, constant development and evaluation of yourself and your business,” said Nonzwanga Sylvia Thisani.

“It took us 10 years to be where we are. But, it can take only a few seconds to mess it all up. Therefore I am a stern believer in doing your best every time and keeping the standards.

“I am a proudly historically disadvantaged woman, rendering a standard service which is not disadvantaged. You give me business, I do my best. If I can’t I will tell you or refer you.

Rainbow Guest House started hosting local guests. The situation gradually changed and today they are proudly hosting locals, nationals and international guests.

“It was difficult to get into the predominantly white market. But I had faith that the Lord would take us through and open doors to us. And it happened.”

The guest house offers transport, fetching guests from the airport, taking them to meetings and even if they wish to go to their preferred restaurant in town.

Rainbow Guest House serves breakfast, dinner and prepares lunch packs for guests.

Catering

The catering department of Rainbow Guest House has escalated.

“I remember our first catering was for four Transnet guests. The largest number we had to cater for totalled 800 guests. We have a good reputation. We have catered for the President’s office thrice.

Awards

As a member of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, Rainbow Guest House has won a long list of awards. Some of the awards include being a finalist in the Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Awards twice as well as the Eskom Business Awards. Rainbow Guest House was also a 2015 Booking.com award winner. It is not always about winning, but through these awards the guest house enjoys enormous exposure.

Thank you

“Thank you to the Metro’s Department of Economic Development office and especially Carleen Arends, who played a tremendous role in the training and development of my staff and me. Also to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for trusting us enough to handle Presidential functions.”

“Thank you to our neighbourhood. They are so supportive, regardless of the South Africa that we live in. You all are good neighbours.

“I am very grateful to local churches, local businesses and fellow guest house owners for their support and co-operation.

“And to Leanne Oelofse, who 10 years ago, at the age of 12 years, designed our first business cards. It did the trick, so thank you to the Oelofse family for their friendship.

“To my husband Lolo, my son and my daughter are my support system through thick and thin.
