The surgical department, with help from other departments at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital, held a Breast Cancer Awareness day in the hospital on the 1st of October.

“It is better to know than to be uncertain. Therefore we engaged all staff members at the hospital as well as patients visiting the hospital,” said Dorothy Minnaar, Area Manager Surgical and Paediatric Department.

They gave information with pamphlets to the patients in out-patients department with assistance of Estelle Botha from Reach for Recovery, a breast cancer support group. As part of the awareness programme they also did breast examinations for males and females and referred patients if any lumps were felt.

“We had sponsors from the sunflower organisation in the form of bandanas to give to all clients coming for breast examinations and also serve tea and muffins.”
