The interest in mountain biking in the Eastern Cape is growing fast. This sport has also become popular at primary as well as high school levels, and encouraged by the Spur School Mountain Bike League.

The region offers various spectacular off the beaten track cycling routes as well as races. Daniel Pienaar Technical High School in Uitenhage, which is the first school in the region who now has its own track. It also offers mountain biking as a school sport.

The official opening and inaugural mountain bike challenge of the DP MTB track is held today.

According to Sampie Marais, organiser of the event and person responsible for the track becoming a reality, the DP mountain bike cycling team will participate in the forthcoming Spur High Schools League national finals. It will be held in Magaliesburg during the first weekend in October.

Today’s DP MTB Challenge comprises a 2.5km distance for kids u.10 (starting time 08:30). The 10km andamp; 20km races will both start at 09:00 and both are open to all mountain bikers. Beginners and cyclists just wanting to enjoy the track are most welcome.

Action starts and ends at the DP sports fields at the giant inflatable Klinicare Pharmacies arch. There will be ample parking, rest room facilities, spectator points and refreshments. As it also is National Braai Day, there will be lots of fires and the public are invited to bring along whatever they wish to braai.

The race offers lots of lucky prizes and hampers with grand medals to all the finishers as well as to category winners.

“We wish to thank the DP Alma Mater fraternity for their enormous support in having the track developed. Also to local businesses like Klinicare Pharmacies, Furnworld, Harbron Quarries, Dajees, Wild Rapids Spur, Computerland and Spar EC for their support and sponsoring of prizes,” said Sampie Marais.
