The fourth induction ceremony of the Uitenhage/Despatch Alpha Leo Club saw Aphiwe Zinto from Muir College being elected as the Leo Club President for 2016.

Zinto has been an active member of the Leo club for the past two years. He and Lyle Ressouw inaugurated the “JTC Talent Show” in 2014. Proceeds from the event raised R8 120 for the local old age home Aandmymering.

The Alpha Leo Club has its origins in the former Junior Town Council, which will now be entering their 29th year in providing a service to the communities of Uitenhage and Despatch. Alpha Leo Club falls under the auspices of the Uitenhage Lions Club. Members have worked on a variety of projects in the local community, such as Willow Dam clean ups, confectionery hand-out at Aandmymering and at Provincial Hospital, making sleeping bags for Eagle Wings and assisting at the soup kitchen at Joe Slovo to mention a few. The club is currently working on annual fundraisers for organisations that need help. The well-known fundraisers are the JTC Talent Show and the JTC Ball.

The ceremony was held at Muir College Boys’ High School and one of Zinto’s fellow Muir classmates, Trent Burness, was elected to serve on the Alpha Leo Club committee. The Uitenhage/Despatch Alpha Leo Club has 42 members and meets every second Wednesday at Muir College (the president’s school)
