The Uitenhage Lions Club is honoured that one of its members will take the position of District Governor of District 410D with effect from 1 July 2015.

Lion Bokkie Oberholzer and his wife Marie, will soon be leaving for Honolulu, Hawaii where Lions International President will officially induct all the DG’s from all across the globe.

Oberholzer joined the Lions in 1990 and has held all the board officers posts, in some cases more than once including President of the Uitenhage Lions Club.

“His contribution and personal involvement in all Club matters have had a most positive effect on the development of the club, members and the community of Uitenhage and Despatch,” said Lion President André van Niekerk.

“His passion to serve the community is striking in whatever he undertakes. He initiated that the Club take over the very successful Lion Rally which is held annually during December in Cradock.

“All funds raised from this rally have in turn enabled the Club to donate in excess of R500 000 to the homeless and others residing in the communities of Despatch, Uitenhage and Cradock who have been caught in the trap of poverty.”

Oberholzer’s monumental contribution to Lions does however not stop at Club level. Since 1996 he has served the Cabinet of District 410D, consisting of 29 Clubs and whose area of jurisdiction stretches from the former Transkei in the north to Swellendam in the south and to Zastron in the west.

“He has demonstrated great leadership qualities and let us not forget his gifted sense of humour which often leads to defuse tense situations.

“It nevertheless goes without saying that behind every successful man is the dynamo that creates the spark of this extraordinary Lion, his good lady Marie. Her unwavering support over the decades has not gone unnoticed by both the local community and fellow Lion members,” said Lion Van Niekerk.

Both Oberholzer and his good lady Marie have been bestowed with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the highest Recognition in Lionism, for Service to the Community
