Christiano Ronaldo does it. You could too. He scores goals. You might not. But, he donates blood and you could too.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has rallied behind the international movement “Be The 1 Donor” to inspire young people to become life-long blood and plasma donors and help save lives.

Ronaldo started donating blood as a 24-year-old when he witnessed one of his teammates battle with the search for a stem cell donor for his ailing son. Seven years later, Ronaldo is still donating blood regularly.

The South African campaign will recruit local ambassadors to take part in awareness-raising activations to spread the word of donating blood.

“We wish to remind donors that they have the power to save lives and someone they might never meet needs their blood and plasma right now,” said Silungile Mlambo, SANBS marketing manager.

For many in need of blood, finding the perfect match is not easy.

It goes far beyond blood type. That is why every person who donates blood is unique and special. Your blood can be one of a kind.

A blood donor can be the single person out of the 7 billion on the planet, needed to save another human life.

Join the Be The 1 Donor movement on Facebook or sign up to donate at BeThe1Donor.com or visit the Uitenhage Blood Donor Centre at 2 Billson Street.
