Wian Schutte, a Grade 9 learner at Despatch High School was selected to represent South Africa in the African Schools Individual Chess Championships which will be held in Zimbabwe. from 19-28August.

Wian represented the Eastern Cape in the in the Winter SA School chess championships which were held in Durban. He ended in third position in the category for boys U/15.

Wian is the only chess player from the Eastern Cape included in the SA schools chess team.

Chess players from 47 African countries will participate and this includes learners from Egypt, Ghana, Botswana, Cape Verde, Madagascar, Malawi and Libya to name a few. The championships will be played in Harare at The Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre in the city’s central business district.
