There is a photo of a notice board, somewhere between the outskirts and nowhere, which is doing the WhatsApp round among VW Syncro owners and it reads: “All drivers of 4x4s please engage your four wheel drive. Select low range. Lock all hubs & diff. Cross your fingers. VW Syncro just drives normally.”

This will be evident during the forthcoming 2016 VW Syncro Saamtrek which will be held at Gariep Forever Resort next to the Gariep Dam from April 27th until May 2nd. It is organised by Stuart Stirling from Syncro SA, VW Syncro Forum which boasts more than 1 500 registered members in South Africa.

Uitenhage is home to a number of Syncronauts, who adore these off-the-beaten-track family size four wheel drive vehicles. Browsing on You Tube, there are exciting videos of locals in their Syncros cruising the Baviaans or enjoying the off-road challenges at The Meadows in the Elands River Valley.

Travelling the approximately 500km from Uitenhage to Gariep, will be worth the boring tar road cruising, as the 2016 Saamtrek will be loaded with Syncro adventure and camaraderie. The provisional itinerary for the Saamtrek includes a dam wall tour, easy going 4x4 trail, nature reserve trail, boat cruise on dam, tiger farm tour, an obstacle course and various other outdoor activities. These are not included in the Saamtrek package.

“This is a fun event. The idea is to get 100 Syncros together and to meet all the people you chat to on the Syncro Forum. We don’t care what Syncros look like. Dented, bashed, rusted, well used, pristine, caravelle, camper, doka, just get it there. The more the merrier,” said Stuart Stirling on the Syncro SA Forum newsletter.

One of the highlights will be the Syncro Count Day, where all the Syncros will join in a dam wall drive as well as crossing the bridge over the Orange River. They then will drive around the dam via Bethulie to get some spectacular video footage of the Saamtrek. There will, of course, be a bit of four wheel drive “showing off” and there is no one more capable than Stuart Pitbull Wonderboom. Go check out his skills on You Tube … Syncromad!

Home is where your Syncro is and during the five nights’ stay there will be communal braai fires each evening with a spit braai on the Saturday evening.

There has not been a national Syncro Saamtrek since 2008. So all Syncros are welcome, T3, T4 and T5 4 motions as well as normal VW buses, Amaroks, Touaregs and any other VW 4x4 vehicles.
