A total of 80 children from Mickey Mouse Crèche in Uitenhage were treated to a fun day at Fairview Racecourse, with a Christmas party and array of treats that left them beaming from ear to ear.

From the specially rented bus that collected all the children and five teachers, to face painting, magic shows and Smiley the Clown handing out ice creams, fairy cakes and goodie bags.

“No effort was spared in giving these children a day that they will truly never forget,” said Mark and Dorrie Sham who are well known in South African horseracing circles.

One of the main highlights of the day, for both children and adults alike, was the arrival of Santa Clause being pulled on a dog sleigh courtesy of local TeleTrack presenter Nadine Low Ah Kee and her good friend, Amy Ratcliffe.

The Shams, for the second year in a row, have come together with colleagues, patrons and friends within the horseracing community to raise desperately needed funds to assist the Mickey Mouse Crèche.

A total of more than R45 000 was raised, which was handed over by Dorrie to an overwhelmed school principal, Lagenay Theron.

“Last year, a similar donation enabled the crèche to buy books, blankets, toiletries, install soft flooring and sliding doors and carry out much needed maintenance to the school facilities, with enough for a monthly amount to be spent on food items,” said Theron.

“Without the generosity of people like Mark and Dorrie Sham, places like Mickey Mouse Crèche would find it very difficult to keep things ticking over.

“We salute you and thank you.”
