The Uitenhage & District SPCA hosted a Rescue Love Story competition in celebration of Valentine’s Day and judges were overwhelmed with the well written stories entered.

“It was heartwarming to have read so many wonderful rescue stories,” said Deirdre Swift, chairperson of the Uitenhage & District SPCA.

“Some of the stories were so well written that it at times had the judges in fits of laughter, and at times it had them in tears. Judging the winners was a very difficult task because each story was truly special.”

The Uitenhage & District SPCA would like to thank all participants for their enthusiastic response.

“This is the first year that we’ve run this competition and we were very pleased with the amount of entries we received. We trust that interest in this competition will grow in the years to come.”

The competition was initiated by friends of the SPCA, Ronel and GP Goosen.

Winners:

The stories were individually read and rated by a panel of 5 judges, after which the scores were tallied. The 2017 winner is Lise Stand-ring for her story about her best friend and soul mate - Caesar. The 1st prize consists of a R500 shopping voucher from the Vet Shop Uitenhage, a Sunday lunch for 2 at Bella’s and gifts for her and her pet.

Madelyne Victor won 2nd prize for her story about her dog, Austin Victor. She received a R250 shopping voucher at The Vet Shop Uitenhage and gifts for her and her pet.

Elize Koch with “Liefdesbrief aan Johanna” and Angelique Tee with “Love Wins All” tied at 3rd place. Each received a R100 shopping voucher at The Vet Shop Uitenhage and gifts for them and their pets.

Congratulations to Matthew Manasse from Convent Primary School for winning the children’s category with his story about his dog, Prince. Matthew won an Animal Encyclopedia and some fun gifts for him and his pet. Convent Primary is the school that had the most entries in the children’s category.

“A huge thank you from the bottom of our animal hearts to Dr Snyman, owner of The Vet Shop Uitenhage, for so generously sponsoring the vouchers. Thank you to Gloria Radyn from Bella’s for sponsoring the Sunday lunch for two for the winner. Without their involvement and generosity we would not have been able to have successfully run this fundraiser. We truly appreciate their continued support.

“We want to send a big thank you to all who participated and we’d like to encourage everyone to enter again in 2018,” said Swift.
