Toe Patricia Claassen op 1 Augustus met die slap lewelose lyfie van haar kleinseun by die hospitaal se nooddienste departement inhardloop nadat hy aan ‘n stukkie hoender verstik het, het sy die ergste verwag.

Dit was die openingsdag van die nuwe, 24-uur nooddienste departement by Netcare Cuyler Hospitaal.

Die fasiliteit met gevorderde mediese toe-rusting is opgerig om die gemeenskap van Uitenhage, Despatch en die omliggende streek te bedien en word beman deur opgeleide mediese en verpleegpersoneel.

“Ons het daardie oggend ons deure oopgemaak en daar was tot op daardie stadium net pasiënte met geringe en matige beserings,” vertel dr. Marné Page, hoof kliniese bestuurder van die praktyk.

“Stefan was die eerste kritieke pasiënt wat ingekom het. Toe sy ouma hom inbring het hy geen hartklop of pols gehad nie en sy pupille was vergroot. Hy was streng gesproke dood,” sê Dr Page.

“Ons het dadelik sy lugweg ondersoek, die obstruksie verwyder en begin met kardio-pulmonêre resussitasie (KPR),” verduidelik hy.

Dr. Nelson Alves, hoof ondernemingsbestuurder van die praktyk was ook byderhand en het gehelp om die klein seuntjie weer by te bring.

“Na ongeveer vyf minute van KPR het Stefan begin snak na sy asem en sy oë het weer normaalweg begin reageer op lig en beweging,” sê Dr. Alves.

Nadat hy gestabiliseer is, is hy opgeneem in die pediatriese intensiewesorgeenheid vir verdere behandeling.
