About 250 Grade 11 and 12 learners from Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas are exposed to the various fields of science at this year’s Science Discovery Week at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Faculty of Science Public Relations intern Nolusindiso Hleko says the purpose of Science Discovery Week, which ends tomorrow, is to introduce learners to the fascinating fields of science in a fun and informal setting.

“One of the major benefits for learners is getting exposed to the different science fields before they apply for tertiary education.

“It is an opportunity for them to get more information to make a more informed decision when choosing a science course to study – because they will at least have a clear idea of what the course entails.”

Activities for the learners include visits to the various Science Faculty departments where they participate in subject-specific experiments.

“Learners are actively involved in performing experiments while gaining more knowledge on science. This will be beneficial particularly to those learners who go to schools that don’t have science labs in which to perform experiments, therefore having to base their science knowledge solely on theory.”

The Science Discovery Week takes place at the Life Sciences Building (Building 127) on NMMU’s South Campus.
