It’s a big step to go into a play school for the first time. Here’s how to make the right choice.

The time has come for your curious toddler to spread his wings and go to play school. But is he or she really ready – and are you?

The most important thing to remember is that your child is an individual and should not be compared to other children his/her age.

Always keep in mind what is best for your child – there is no real right or wrong time for your toddler to go to a play school.

If you are concerned that your child is not ready for preschool, then don’t rush him/her into it too soon because it could make him/her feel like a failure if he/she has trouble keeping up.

Is your child ready for play school?

•Is your toddler potty trained? Some play schools only accept children that are.

•Is he/she showing signs of independence? Or does he/she need you to be with him/her every moment of the day?

•Does your toddler interact with other people easily? If your child is still very clingy consider taking him/her to a playgroup a few days a week to get used to other caregivers and children.

•Can he/she follow simple instructions and follow a routine? Schedules are followed at play schools and your toddler will have to get used to moving from one activity to another.

How to find the right nursery school

•You can get a list of the recommended nursery schools from your area’s primary schools and then make an appointment with the ones that appeal to you.

A few questions and points to look out for are:

•The size and safety of the classrooms and playground.

•Security at the gates and ask about their emergency situations policies.

•What they get for lunch and ask to see the kitchen.

•Cleanliness and safety in the toilet and basin area.

•The teachers’ qualifications and the child-teacher ratio.

•A timetable of what their daily routine will be.

•Activities at school and what is the educational value of the activities.

How much food do you need to concentrate?

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
