The Uitenhage Lions Club is one of the 46 000 Lions Clubs worldwide of Lions Club International (LCI) that was founded on 7 June 1917.

“Since then LCIF has paid over US$ 1 billion in grants and currently has 1 445 591 members which is an all-time record that result in Lion clubs serving more communities and people around the world than ever before,” said Hein de Very, Lion President of the Uitenhage Lions Club.

As part of the LCI challenge of service to communities around the world, the call went out to clubs to focus on service areas such as vision, youth, hunger and environment in celebration of 100 year’s service. Local projects included assisting with a fundraiser for Retina South Africa, 100 deeds for 100 needs with the assistance of their Leo Club, supporting a school feeding scheme during the Week of Hunger, receiving the support from local business to refurbish part of the Uitenhage Railway Station which was declared a heritage site plus maintaining standard projects in support of the local community.
