Water supply to Uitenhage suburbs was affected since last Friday as a result to vandalism at the pump station located close to the Van Riebeeck reservoir.

Vanes Estate, Fairbridge Heights, Scheepershoogte, Winterhoek Park, Strelitzia Park and surrounding areas were without water since early Saturday after electrical panels and cabling were damaged resulting in a fire at the pump station.

“A temporary control panel was finished on Tuesday afternoon resulting in the pump working again,” said Acting Communications Director of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Kupido Baron.

“We expect that the Fairbridge Reservoir fill take a few days to fill up and request residents to conserve water as soon as supply is restored. We would like thank the residents from the affected areas for their patience.”

“Vandals caused a fire while stealing cables and damaging electrical panels at the pump station resulting in several suburbs not having water.”

The municipality installed communal taps at the entrances of THS Daniel Pienaar and Strelitzia High School. A tanker was also placed at the corner of Van Riebeeck and Errol Drive.

A docket has been opened with the South African Pplice Services and residents are requested to assist the police if they have any information that can lead to the arrest of the culprits.
