Pietermaritzburg - The woman allegedly caught red-handed trying to sell her 19-month-old baby has been remanded in custody.

The decision was made in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday and, according to Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese, she will stay in custody until October 26 for her formal bail application.

Ngobese said her baby boy has been left in the care of the Department of Social Development and is currently staying in a Pietermaritzburg foster home.

The 20-year-old Imbali woman was arrested on Thursday after posting an advert on Gumtree last week for the sale of her baby for R5 000. Alerted by concerned citizens, police set up an undercover sting operation on Thursday under the pretence of purchasing the child and arrested the woman
