1 000 arrests in Eastern Cape crime op
Johannesburg - More than a thousand people have been arrested in the Eastern Cape as part of Operation Duty Calls launched last month, police said on Tuesday.
Those arrested were sought for a variety of crimes, including car theft, hijacking and possession of stolen goods, said Lieutenant Colonel Sibongile Soci.
Mkhululi Mpuso and Mkhuseli Gada, two of the province's most wanted men, were arrested on November 4, he said.
Stolen goods valued at R250 000 were recovered, and 27 illegal firearms and ammunition were confiscated. Dagga with an estimated street value of R500 000 had also been confiscated since October 11.
Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta would hand over 12 high performance vehicles to the tracking team next week, Soci said.
