1 200 cars an hour stream into KZN from Joburg
Johannesburg - One thousand two hundred cars are travelling from Johannesburg in the direction of KwaZulu-Natal through the Tugela Toll Plaza per hour, Johannesburg metro police said on Saturday.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said 1 200 cars had passed through the toll plaza between 09:00 and 10:00 on Saturday morning.
"Lower traffic volumes are leaving Johannesburg since last night (Friday) but there are officers on duty who will be monitoring all the main routes."
Meanwhile, 29 drunken drivers were arrested at roadblocks in Randburg , Soweto and Roodepoort on Friday night, said Minaar.
Those arrested had blood samples taken and were then placed in police cells. To be released, the drivers had to pay R1 000 to R1 500 in bail.
Metro police will be conducting more roadblocks around the city over the Christmas weekend.
Minnaar urged motorists not to drink and drive during festivities.
