Port Elizabeth - About 1 400 people have been evacuated due to flooding in Nelson Mandela Bay on Thursday, the municipality said.

Residents have been placed at various halls and community centres, said spokesperson Kupido Baron.

"We are receiving help from various organisations who are donating food, clothing and other necessities," he said.

A number of roads were closed in low lying areas including the dip in Third Avenue, Newton Park, Old Uitenhage Road, between Nooitgedacht and Kleinskool, and the lower ends of Burman and Solumtu Roads.
