Johannesburg - A robber was shot dead and another wounded in a shootout with police in Bryanston, police said on Tuesday.
Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the police opened fire at suspects who pointed firearms at them on Monday evening.
"One was shot dead and another was wounded at the premises in Bryanston. Four others were arrested," he said.
Police had responded to information about a burglary in progress in Mount Street, Bryanston. Upon arrival they saw a bakkie and a Mercedes Benz parked at the house.
Washing machines, plasma televisions and two fridges stolen from the house were already loaded onto the bakkie.
The robbers tried to run away in different directions.
"One tried to scale a wall, turned around and pointed a gun at the police officers. They were forced to act in self-defence and shots were fired at him. He died at the scene."
Another man was shot and wounded when he ignored police warnings to keep his hands up.
"He suddenly reached down in the pitch darkness and was shot in the leg by police."
Police seized the two cars.
The arrested four were to appear in the Randburg Magistrates' Court on Thursday, Opperman said.
