Johannesburg - One woman died and 19 other people were injured when a school bus crashed into a house in Krugersdorp on Saturday, Gauteng paramedics said.

ER 24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the fully laden bus was unable to make the turn and crashed into three women sitting on grass next to the road before it crashed into the wall of a complex.

"One of the women suffered fatal injuries and she appeared to have been dragged under the bus for a short while," Jackson said.

"Another woman suffered serious injuries as both of her legs were broken, she was quickly transported to a nearby hospital... The third woman walked away from the incident with no physical injuries."

Jackson said there were 43 women and 17 children in the bus.

No one in the house

Seventeen people from the bus were transported to hospital after they suffered moderate injuries.

Another woman, who was travelling in the bus, was airlifted to hospital after having suffered multiple broken bones, she added.

"There was no one in the house at the time. The cause of the accident is not yet known and police will investigate."

Earlier, Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said the driver had lost control of the vehicle.
