Johannesburg - A man died and seven people were seriously injured in a head-on collision on the R104 Brokhorspruit Road near Pretoria on Saturday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said one of the cars had veered out of its lane into oncoming traffic.

Both cars skidded to a halt on the side of the road.

One of the drivers died at the scene.

Five passengers from the car were trapped in the wreckage and had to extricated from the vehicle, said Wicks. The driver and two passengers of the other car were found lying near the wreckage.

The injured were taken to the Bronkhorstspruit, Mamelodi Day and Steve Biko Academic Hospitals.
