East London - A man has been shot dead by the police and another arrested following an armed robbery in Ilinge, near Queenstown, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

The robbery occurred at a post office at about 17:00 on Monday, said Warrant Officer Namhla Mdleleni.

"It is alleged that three suspects held the post office staff at gun-point and demanded money," said Mdleleni.

"Police received information about the armed robbery, and on arrival a shoot-out ensued, which resulted in one suspect being shot and killed on the scene."

One man was arrested and the third escaped. Police recovered an undisclosed amount of money taken from the post office.

Mdleleni said a case of armed robbery was being investigated.

The man was expected to appear soon in the Ilinge Magistrate's Court.
