Polokwane - A suspected criminal is dead after being necklaced in Thohoyandou, while another is in a critical condition, Limpopo police said on Monday.

The men were attacked in separate incidents.

In the first case, a foreign national was assaulted and set alight by mob at a taxi rank in Thohoyandou on Friday.

"The suspect was accused of stealing a cellphone from a pensioner. He was caught, beaten and set alight," said Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo.

The suspect was alive when he was set ablaze, but died from his injuries.

In a separate incident, a man alleged to have tried robbing someone, was caught, beaten and set alight on Saturday.

He, however, was rescued and rushed to a local hospital.

On Monday, no arrests had been made in connection with either incident.

Malelo appealed to communities to stop taking the law into their own hands and said police were investigating the attacks.
